THE GENERATIONS NATIVE AMERICAN RADIO ARCHIVES PROJECT

Was made possible through...

The VISION of Marie Helene Laraque

Marie Helene Laraque

Who in the early 1970s established INDIGENA and News From Indian America, a bilingual Spanish/English Publication which was distributed throughout the Americas and the world.

Through INDIGENA Marie Helene was able to co-publish , the INDIGENA Pamphlet series on the rights of Central and South American Natives, in collaboration with Akwesasne Notes.

In the 1970s, Marie Helene was a key to Native people in North America connecting with the Native Peoples of Central and South America.

Working with Ralph Nader, and Dr. Shelton Davis among others she organized to bring attention to the struggles of Brazilian Natives faced with world development.

Marie Helene also participated in conferences on Indigenous Rights and was able in 1992, to attend the Gathering of Indigenous Peoples held in Quito, Ecuador.

Throughout her life Marie Helene continued to gather, record and distribute valuable knowledge on the Native American Experience, Historical and Contemporary.

We have much to be thankful to her for!

the GUIDANCE of Peggy Berryhill

In the mid-1970s Peggy Berryhill established the Native Radio program, Living On Indian Time at Pacifica station KPFA-FM, Berkeley, Calif. At a time when few of us knew what Native American Radio was, or what to do with it, Peggy was determinedly cranking out weekly broadcasts and reports on the Native situation, issues and concerns.

From KPFA-FM and Living On Indian Time, Peggy has gone on to work with National Public Radio, Native American Public Telecommunications and with the Smithsonian Institute in advancing the state of Native American Radio and Programming.

After almost 30 years in the field, Peggy Berryhill continues to work for the development of Native American Radio stations and programming.

Thank You Peggy Berryhill for all you do!

and the continual SUPPORT of KGNU-FM,
Boulder County Community Radio

Since November 1978, KGNU-FM has provided their station resources and airspace for the development and ongoing presentation of Native American Radio programming. Within the framework of a non-native station, KGNU has consistently made space for and facilitated Native American programming.

There are so many people who have been a part of this project coming about, yet these are the most important.

For, without the VISION of Marie Helene Laraque,
without the GUIDANCE of Peggy Berryhill
and without the SUPPORT of KGNU-FM
these archive recordings would not exist!
