GOAL
GENERATIONS is committed to informing people about the past, present and future experiences of Native people of the Americas.

 

OBJECTIVES
  • To document the Native American experience.
  • To provide professionally produced audio programs about Native Americans.
  • To insure that the information in these programs is truly representative of Native people.
  • To provide access to the audio communication media.
  • To assist Native American communities in utilizing the media.
  • To demystify old and new stereotypes of Native people.

ACTIVITIES

 

Generations Programming

Generations - Native American Radio was founded in November 1978 at KGNU-FM Boulder, Colo. along with Native American students from the University of Colo. Boulder.

During the early phase of Generations - Native American Radio, focus was on producing 1/2 hr., 1/4 hr.,and 3 hr. weekly Program formats from 1978 - 1983

During this period we produced these Radio Documentary programs:

  • At The Crossroads: Indian Control of Indian Education - 1980
    1/2 hr. documentary produced for Horizons series - National Public Radio
  • We Can't Live Here: Uranium Mining in Southwest U.S. - 1980
    1/2 hr. documentary produced for Horizons series - National Public Radio
  • Contemporary Native Americans: More Than Song & Dance - 1981
    Five 1 hr. Radio Documentary program series on History, Philosophy, International Affairs, Music and Literature produced for KNGU-FM, Boulder County Community Radio with a grant from the Colo. Arts & Humanities Council

The Native American Radio program slot at KGNU-FM was transferred in August 1983 to the Ind. Ed. Program for Boulder Valley School District, it became "Indian Voices".

Indian Voices continues production as a community based program which works closely with the Native American Journalist Association.

 

Generations Training
During this later phase Generations - Native American Radio focused on the development and implementation of training programs for introducing audio production and broadcast skills to Native American youth. Thus, empowering them to continue the process of documenting Native America.
Following is a list of these efforts.
  • April 14-15 1989 - Colorado Indian Education Association 2nd Annual Conf. Presented Intro to Audio Production Workshops for Native youth.
  • April 18 1989 - Celebration of Cultures - DPS Ind Ed Prog./Baker "Coyote Story" Facilitated Native students development of a Sound Demonstration Audio presentation
  • 6 May 1989 - Career Options Conference - Colo. Dept. of Education Presented Intro to Audio Production Workshops for Native youth.
  • Nov. 1989 - Dec. 1990 - Goin On Yoing Indian Producers Project W/ Indian Voices KGNU-FM Bldr., Co. Provided Audio/Broadcast production training for Native youth.
  • Nov. 1989 - May 1990 - Sounds Native, Ind. Ed. Prog. St. Vrain Valley School Dist. Provided Audio Theater production training for Native youth.
  • Mar. 3 1990 - Career Options II - Colo. Dept. of Education Presented Intro to Audio Production Workshops for Native youth.
  • April 16, 1990 - Goin On: Young Indian Producers Presentation for Native American Awareness Week, Univ. of Colo. Boulder
  • Nov. 5, 1990 - "Kick Off" National American Indian Heritage Month, Young Indian Producers presented Sound Demonstration Earth Colo. Commission of Indian Affairs, Denver Botanic Gardens
  • Nov. 1990 - Ways Of The People, KRMA Ch 6 Documentary Program featured a story on the Goin On: Young Indian Producers Project.
  • Dec. 11, 1990, Northern Plains News: Goin On Young Indian Producers presentation for the Wounded Knee Massacre; A Day Long Remembrance, Dennis Small Third World Center, Univ. of Colo. Boulder

Most significant of our accomplishments during this period was our involvement in the production of the Spirits of the Present radio series:

Spring 1991 - Apr. 1992 - Spirits of the Present: The Legacy From Native America Produced the program "Sustaining Our Communities: Natural Resource Management" for the thirteen prog. series sponsored by the Native American Public Broadcasting Consortium and the Smithsonian Institute.
